Utah, U.S.A
Joined over the theme “Body of Drought”, to explore the Utah desert and the deep material relationships that come from extreme environments. Four artist-researchers from the U.S.A, Canada, and Malaysia came together, starting in Salt Lake City, meeting with local Ochre educator and book store owner Elpitha Tsoutsounakis to grind ochre into pigment. We visited the Great Salt Lake and researched the protesting and story-making surrounding the water loss, and journeyed to Hurricane, Utah, to find water in the desert, explore extreme heat, and prototype scores around sounds and movement.
Field Laboratory, 2025
Barcelona and Girona, Spain
Explored an entwined understanding of home and habitat.
We gathered in Barcelona and the northern region of Empordà, bordering France, to investigate how habitat and home are conceived in the region and the Mediterranean more broadly, how migration is formulated in the imaginary of Southern Europe, and how farming and knowledge of the land have the potential to provoke different relations and forms of cohabitation. The week was dedicated to studying how correspondences between the socio-ecological context of an urban area like Barcelona can connect to rural practices of hospitality and regeneration, illuminating different perspectives on how we understand migration, invasive species, border infrastructure, mass tourism, drought, and vulnerabilities of the climate emergency, among other regional concerns.
